From the back scene of Batman animation, John Roesch, the foley artist, demonstrated how to create sound for every motion in the film. '' If we've done the job correctly, you don't know we've done it.'' The artists will play the sound either it should be there or should not be there in a way that the audience don't feel like the sounds are added afterwards. However, one sound-making method sometimes work for multiple scenarios. For example, breaking off the celery into two pieces matches the sound of bone-breaking perfectly. Whereas, in Cinderella sound-prodeced by Peter Burgis, the crunching sound of the celery would be for a character with a sniff neck.

The Domino setups may not display for the purpose of sound-making in the first place, yet the materials bouncing and crushing into each other in individual section produces a series of ''music'' in addition of humorous visual impact.

A basket of pingpong balls falling off from a height and hitting the metal ''hat'' on the man applies visual and audio effect to that part of domino. The sound of pingpong bouncing around has a special light click. Thus, the mixture of ''click'' made as the balls fall and bounce back and fall in a undisciplined order has similar characters to a musical rhythm.

A spinning guitar with spoons connected by string at its one end clicks on glasses, etc. The idea of a real instrument(guitar) as the only part that is not making sound/music gives a ironic vibe to the setup.

Black Mirror

S3 Ep01 Nosedive

The main character Lacie Pound lives in a world where everyone you meet can rate you out of five stars due to technology inside phones and standard smart lenses that display everyone's name and current rating. The rating affects social standing, for example people below 2.5 considered lower-class and they would be rejected to consume some 'high end' products even if they are willing to spend their money on it. People are acting polite to strangers or even mean colleagues who have high ratings, just to boost their rating so that they would have more respect from the society and probably get into the inner of high rating friend group. This app drives people in that world constantly going on social media to check their current rating and to leave high ratings under others' post- hoping to receive same range of rating.

Haiku by Eli Kleppe

download.php?file=2604638&embedded=1&textbox=2748405

Haiku is an experimental graphic design poster print project showing the words of a haiku in white 3D typography by Eli Kleppe. The way she combined new technologies and traditional techniques creates something very unique and visually engaging. She experiments with printing white on white and levels of pressure on the printing presses by combining lasercut technology with letterpress and embossing machines. The aim was to eliminate all ink and create a legible typography with a sort of reductive process. Thus she minimises the inner of W, O, U, etc. and instead the initials by solid round/triangle- shapes which are also recognisable for individual letter.

Jean Jullien

Text box

Jullien has a observational, critical and playful approach to life. He realised that design and illustration were basically about making the everyday exciting and creative. And design for the routine, is what really got him into the industry, into what he do and what he wants to do today. He believes that art could carry on anywhere and that by interacting with real objects and things happened in daily life. The consistently staying current and reverent to people he communicated with, the relation people got when they see a funny vision of their daily lives, drives people following Jullien on social media to keep up his temporary illustrated version of current. People reacted well to it, and it seems like they could identify themselves to some of the things and situations he was describing.

Hundo Marimba

(Although Hundo Marimba is a electrical drum-pad)

The design of four identical rectangular shapes create a neat appearance and the idea of it is for musicians to work easily with more room and minor amount of grids, as drum-pads are used to be managed with smaller grids of the ten notes(F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A). The production of Hundo also takes the variety of needs from costumers into consideration- they offers sets of bars with other features since the grid can be removed and reconfigured on request, which gives the instrument more possibilities.

Be Open Sound Portal

Be Open used London to take on the exploration of sound, exhibited in Trafalgar Square at last year’s London Design Festival.  It is a project for students of Chelsea College of Art and Design to present urban sound in their sounding space. One of the students' work documents sound of waves washing over sand and rocks, which can be called a breakthrough in the art of sound. It inspires me to produce a device/instrument that simulates the structure of the ''waves+rocks'', in respect of the music made by mother nature.

Pause

Pause is a meditate app which you press at anywhere on screen and it would have a water-drop bubble expanding as you keep pressing. The interactive design helps people to relax and reduce stress. The designers wanted to create something that just about anyone would be able to pick up and experience the value of themselves, with little or no instruction. The endless process of expanding beyond the screen shown leaves users to focus on the relaxing effect of their own repetitive movements and the audio.

PAUSE's design went for inspirations through experimenting with different shapes such as an iceberg, crystals (they sink in the ocean since the open space of sea often brings calmness) in order to embrace mindfulness and meditative philosophies during interactions.

The first draft of the sound in PAUSE was not made until the graphics and motions were in place as it was yet not possible to get the sounds right and get them to fit before visual effects completed. They tested adding different natural sounds during the user testing sessions, using waves and birds. One of our testers suggested to have different sounds depending on where your fingers were on the screen. Then they decided on that a sweeping sound around one chord would work better- a repeating, soothing loop that lets you drift away.

Warhol: Campbell`s soup skateboard - blood, green

Text box

download.php?file=2604139&embedded=1&textbox=2748424

The product is sold in Tate museum which combines Andy Warhol's 32 Campbell?s Soup Cans paintings and skateboard(the 'it' item to have among British youth). As the description http://shop.tate.org.uk/artist-products/warhol-campbells-soup-skateboard-blood-green/invt/18007 says- all designs are individually silkscreen printed by hand to ensure the artwork looks as good as possible, and the artist's signature is printed on the back. Plus, the product will be delivered in custom protective packaging and include special wall mounts which give the board a floating appearance.

Andy Warhol is known for using bold and contrast colours, thus the designer chose green for the background (in contrast with the red)to bring Warhol's character into the style of the product. The well thought designs would definitely attract young art-lover in Britain, which stands out from basic souvenirs in galleries and museums- books, accessories, badges, etc.

Furqan Jawed

The artist chose Urdu as the preferred language, and worked under many restraints such as usage of same typeface through all the assignments, no color, only usage of typefaces, no illustrations of any kind, modifications of fonts were permitted, and also only "black on white", black background was banned. He did a series of visual representation of the poem of the same name written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz- this poem was written during the freedom struggle in India. Jawed played with the scale and the proportion of each Urdu letter. For example the poster shown below, the thick letter in centre means 'speak' which emphasises the concept of the poem quoted with a thinner typeface on the page. He took use of the end of two strokes of the letter and expended them to the edge of the poster to crack the page into three parts visually- which elevates the complexity on the page with minimised elements.

Instagram Icon

Before/After

With the new design, all apps now have a cleaner, less colorful design as the app text is now black and white and notification icons have been changed from orange to red. It is aimed to put more emphasis on users' photos and videos rather than the app itself. However, the original app icon seems to be fond more than current flatten version. 'These early 'flattening' explorations lacked the visual weight of the original. The skeumorphic style that dominated early versions of iOS has the benefit of giving icons solidity. Things felt tangible, despite being pixels.', says Spalter. Yet there is a reason behind the change- Instagram used to be known for its photo filters and effects that gave images a retro edge, and Many people would even take their photos from Instagram and put them on a different social platform. The former logo, a retro brown and cream camera with a rainbow stripe honoured to the iconic Polaroid cameras, was instantly recognisable, but set its branding into a camera app instead of a social media platform. Thus the designers minimised the awareness and identification towards function of editing photos by changing the icon into a colourful one, suggesting the experiences users going to have within sharing amazing and inspirational photos via Instagram.

Who Should I Be With?

The school of Life

download.php?file=2604048&embedded=1&textbox=2748419

Relationships are so far one of the most confused things people dealing with. This product could be an icebreaker at a party, which cards inside describe some leading habits and character traits in people, so that we could have a clearer idea of what specific things matter to us and what we cannot endure under any circumstances. It is not a only a fun table game but actually help consumers to figure out this important matter in life- so many people can only give vague answers when they get asked about their ideal significant other. Even though the conditions listed on the cards are random, they still sharpen our sense of what we should be looking for in love. The package is in black and white, with touches of bright red/orange- it lightens up visually as in the cards would lead us to the light from the mist of confusion in what we want in future relationship. The colour choices with the neat typeface suits both genders' taste which is a delicate detail as it sets the consumer base.

032c is a fashion and art magazine published twice a year, the designer Helmut Lang like to keep all the traditions and shades that were good ? and then re-thought it all. And how Lang systematically deconstructed every assumption about clothing and the way it is worn and communicated gives him the idea to show clothing for men and women in a single presentation. The name came from the pantone system- 032c is the branding colour for this magazine. Under the influence of early German modernism of the 1950's, the designers wanted to have a systematic apporach to life, culture and design. They then realized that the Pantone colour system is actually quite beautiful as a system of understanding. It's an abstract number code, but with a very specific meaning. Moreover, anyone around the world would have understood that, which works better than any languages. The very abstract motivation highlights the atmosphere of the magazine, making it globally unique.
